Speak kindly…

I love the idea of talking to plants – and quite often I do it!

Just recently I spotted this anonymous quote circulating on social media:

If speaking kindly to plants makes them grow… imagine what speaking kindly to humans can do.

It’s a beautiful sentiment and one that resonates deeply with me.

There’s so much hate speech in the world at the moment.

It comes back to the old adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.

It’s amazing how a simple smile or gesture, or a kind word can really lift your mood and brighten your whole day.

It can be from a friend or colleague, or a complete stranger.

A few years ago my husband had a heart attack four days before Christmas and a week before we were due to fly overseas.

Our world was immediately turned updside down.

I remember walking to my car – head full of a thousand things – when a woman (a complete stranger to me) walking towards me gave me a lovely smile and said ‘Happy Christmas’.

It didn’t feel very happy in my world right then, but such a simple thing touched me so deeply, I was crying by the time I reached my car.

A random act of kindness.

I’ll never forget it.

But back to talking to plants…

An article in The Washington Post earlier this year quotes Heidi Appel, a professor of environmental sciences at the University of Toledo in Ohio as saying:

“Plants definitely respond to vibrations in their environment — which can cause plants to grow differently and become more resistant to falling over.”

Patricia Hasbach, a psychotherapist with Northwest EcoTherapy says as humans, we often speak to what we’re caring for.

“It helps us be very present or mindful.”

People talk to their plants because it ‘feels nice’.

So imagine how good you’ll feel if you say something nice to someone else!

It benefits everyone so let’s give it a go 🙏
